Adia Adia

Sarah McLachlan

Adia I do believe I've failed you
Adia I know I've let you down
Don't you know I tried so hard
To love you in my way?
It's easy....let it go...

Adia, I'm empty since you left me
I try to find a way to carry on
I search myself and everyone
To see where we went wrong
There's no one left to finger
There's no one here to blame
There's no one left to talk to, honey
And there ain't no one to buy our innocence

'Cause we are born innocent
Believe me Adia
We are still innocent
It's easy, we all falter
Does it matter?

Adia, I thought that we could make it
I know I can't change the way you feel
I leave you with your misery
A friend who won't betray
I'll pull you from your tower
I'll take away your pain
Show you all the beauty you possess
If only you'd let yourself believe

That we are born innocent
Believe me Adia
We are still innocent
It's easy, we all falter
Does it matter?

'Cause we are born innocent
Believe me Adia
We are still innocent
It's easy, we all falter
Does it matter?
Believe me Adia
We are still innocent
'Cause we are born innocent
Believe me Adia
We are still innocent
It's easy, we all falter
Does it matter?

I’m not sure if Adia is supposed to be male or female, but in my personal view I see ‘it’ as a male. In this case, Mulder. The thought of Scully as she decides whether or not to quit the FBI. Scully feels as though she’s holding him back, that she’s let him down in his search for the truth because she doesn’t believe (not quite yet at least) or that she is giving up. She loves him but she can’t tell him, so she shows him the only way she knows how - which is by keeping it all inside. She can’t blame anyone but herself for her inability to express her feelings. She mourns for both their loss of innocence, Mulder as a child and hers after she joined the X-Files. They haven’t found the truth yet but does it really matter? They’re only human after all. She would be leaving him alone with his sorrow and guilt, betraying him as everyone else he ever loved has. If only he could see past his guilt and self degradation, see what a beautiful person he is. Everyone is born innocent and though they have both lost theirs, isn’t there a chance that they could regain some measure of it? I know, doesn’t make much sense but sometimes it’s hard to put into words.
