From both their point of view. If Mulder never knew Scully he would never have found love, the other half of his soul. In his world of deception and darkness, she it the truth and the light. He owes her everything, he'd be lost without her. If Scully never knew him she might be safe, as a teacher at Quantico or perhaps a doctor at some hospital, but she wouldn't he nearly as happy or complete. Together they thought they could make a difference, fight the lies and make the world a better place, but they didn't know how dangerous it was to love.
