When Mulder was losing Scully to cancer, he felt as though he was losing everything. It was tearing him apart, he couldn't live without her. Yet he blames himself for her cancer. They gave it to her because he cared for her and they were using her to make him believe. His temper is frightening when he feels that she is threatened, without her his life means nothing and if she were to die he would soon follow. No one else understands but her. Loving her wasn't supposed to be dangerous, it wasn't supposed to put her life in jeopardy. It wasn't supposed to kill her.
