Promises In The Dark Promises In The Dark
Pat Benatar

Never again, isn't that what you said?
You've been through this before
You swore, this time, you'd think with your head
No one would ever have you again
And if takin' was gonna get done you'd decide where and when

Just when you think you got it down, your heart securely tied and bound
They whisper promises in the dark

Armed and ready, you fought love battles in the night
But too many opponents made you weary of the fight
Blinded by passion, you foolishly let someone in
All the warnings went off in your head, still you had to give in

Just when you think you got it down, resistance nowhere to be found
They whisper promises in the dark

But promises, you know what they're for
It sounds so convincing, but you heard it before
'Cause talk is cheap and you gotta be sure
And so you put up your guard
And you try to be hard but your heart says try again

(Solo)

You desperately search for a way to conquer the fear
No line of attack has been planned to fight back the tears
Where brave and restless dreams are both won and lost
On the edge is where it seems it's well worth the cost

Just when you think you got it down, your heart in pieces on the ground
They whisper promises in the dark

An interpretation of Mulder’s inability to keep from going after vague leads. He tells himself that he would think before he acted, that he won’t let himself be helplessly taken over by powerful emotions because someone seemed to have the truth. He would be the one to decide when to accept that truth. Whenever he thinks he has his emotions under control, someone comes along with promises of the truth. He fights with his emotions at night, facing endless nightmares and sleeplessness. That coupled with all the efforts of the Syndicate to crush him has pushed him to the edge, too weary to fight back any longer. So he had trusts someone, although every fiber in his being tells him not to and he follows their bread crumbs. Whenever the truth is so close it’s palpable, they promise him that there is so much more that he doesn’t know. So his search continues. He knows that he has come so close many times and each time all the explanations and proof that Scully provides sounds convincing, becoming harder and harder to ignore. Because he has nothing but the word of the Syndicate against hers, he has to make sure he chooses the right truth and try to be objective but he eventually lets his heart decide for him. And each time he has to overcome the fear of what the truth means to him. And no matter what he does, they rip his hope away, leaving him to struggle with his losses. The answers buried so deeply that in order to be uncovered, the cost is often too great. But he believes that the answers are worth the cost to him. But he could never accept the cost to Scully and is continually plagued with guilt at what she has had to pay. And after his hopes have been shattered once again, his heart in pieces, another clouded figure comes along with promises to give back that hope.
